The ancient Maya believed that volcanoes were holy places where the Gods and spirits resided. Cerro Quemado is considered one of the best places to get close to the Gods. Thats why people come from all over the region to pray and perform ceremonies, bringing flowers and sometimes food and alcohol to leave as offerings to God and the ancestors. Some people also believe that Juan Noj, a supernatural Maya being,lives in the volcano.
